Whether you’re decorating for a toddler, a teen or a child inbetween, use paint to give their bedroom some personality and make it a unique space for them to sleep, play, learn and hang out. The walls are a great base to get creative and you can afford to experiment with ideas you might not be brave enough to introduce in other rooms.
Designing a cool pad for a teenager? Maybe you want to use bright colours and shapes for a bedroom-come-playroom? Or create a sweet mural for a nursery that’s easy to update as your child grows older? Painting the walls, in whichever way you choose, can be as quick and easy as you’d like, and you can always get the kids to help you with the project, too, if they’re old enough, whether it’s with the actual painting or with simply ideas that they can help bring to life.
We’ve found the latest ideas to inspire you – all you need is some paint and a bit of imagination…

Walls in Surrender; headboard in Blue Night; bedside table in Sea Nymph, all Resene.
1. Design a Headboard
Make an impact in a bedroom by painting a large statement headboard behind your child’s bed. The beauty of this idea is that you can go for any shape you want – curved, scalloped, a triangle or a wow-factor square like this one above.
In a nursery, you could also use it to frame a cot, or paint a shape behind a large piece of furniture – and you can decide if you want to use a bold colour or something soft and tonal.
Style tip: Why not paint picture frames and other accessories in the same colour, to keep your scheme feeling cohesive?

Walls in Seagull; clouds in Quarter Alabaster, finished in FX Write-on Wall Paint; headboard cloud in Alabaster; sun in Gorse; floor in Spinnaker; desk in Shakespeare; stool in Jelly Bean (base) and Shakespeare (top); bedside table in Jelly Bean, all Resene.
2. Write on the Wall
Turn your child’s bedroom wall into a whiteboard using a specialist paint? It means they’ll be able to doodle or write on the wall and you won’t have to worry as it’s easy to wipe off.
Another idea is to paint a ‘noticeboard’ sized area and create a grid for them to use as a weekly homework planner. Or, let them use it to practise their spelling or times tables? Alternatively, you could use it to draw a ‘good behaviour’ chart for a small child or as a spot for them – and their friends – to write messages to each other. The options are endless!

Wall grid in Sea World; table, crosses and hanging pot in Havoc; chairs and noughts in Shooting Star; wall and floors in Pearl Lusta.
3. Game On!
Create your game of choice on the wall by using magnetic paint. Something as simple as noughts and crosses is made extra fun when it’s supersized and on the wall, as we’ve shown above. Get creative – turn the wall into a racetrack, with magnetic cars that can be moved around, or a solar system, with planets that can circle the earth?
Style tip: Make sure you use high-quality magnets to avoid items falling off the wall.

Creating a special reading nook for any age with the bold black of Blackboard Paint. Floor in Alabaster, all Resene.
4. Create a Giant Blackboard
What could be more fun for any child than being allowed to draw, doodle and write on the walls? Especially when the entire wall is a chalkboard! You can either paint it in the traditional black, or use a coloured chalkboard finish instead.
Let them create their own artworks, or draw an image that they can colour in – and if they go outside the lines, it’s easy to rub out and start again!
Style tip: Not keen on a whole chalkboard wall? Paint a few drawers instead, so you can clearly mark out their contents – no more forgetting which one is the sock drawer!

Create an eye-catching fire truck like this one with a base coat of Cotton Wool. Details in Rocket, Blue Jeans, Hi Jinx and Bright Spark; outlines and ladder in Ragamuffin. Drawers like these make a great statement against neutral walls and flooring such as these ones in Gull Grey and Colorwood Mid Greywash, all Resene.
5. Have Fun With Furniture
If you don’t want to paint the walls, paint a piece of furniture to liven up the space instead. You could turn a chest of drawers or wardrobe into a brightly-coloured vehicle or even their favourite cartoon character. Or simply paint a pattern, such as stripes or spots.
Draw out your design first and make sure you’re happy with it before starting to paint your furniture, and once finished you may want to seal it with a top coat to help protect it from knocks and chips.
Using paint is a great way to turn an otherwise functional piece of furniture into a fun feature that your child will love to use.

Wall in Frozen and Sunkissed; side wall in Foundry; floor in Quarter Alabaster; diamond pattern in Sunkissed and Tussock; toy box in Quarter Alabaster; diamonds in Frozen, Tussock and Sunkissed, all Resene.
6. Go for Geometrics
Try your hand at creating a geometric-shaped design – it’s easier than you think! Mark out your design on the wall using decorator’s tape, whether it’s triangles, hexagons or a wall split into different shapes. Your child will love the modern finish and you’ll be able to use a combination of colours to create a bold, bright creation.
Style tip: For an easier way to add a geo pattern, paint the whole wall in one colour and use Washi tape to add a border or diamond effect.

Walls and floor in Quarter Foundry; upper floor in Jumbo; re-purposed wooden crates in Smoke Tree; canvas art in Smoke Tree and Licorice, all Resene.
7. Give off a Cool Vibe
Create an edgy look in a teen’s room by using a combination of two colours on the wall, with one stopping halfway and showing rough-looking brushmarks for an unfinished, industrial look.
Style tip: Don’t feel you have to be too structured in where you hang pictures or wall accessories – blur the lines by placing a few framed prints, postcards, or even shelves on top, above and just below the line to give the room a dynamic feel.

Walls in Blue Lagoon; floor in Vista Blue; pegboard noticeboard and chair in Revolution; desk legs in Scrumptious; table top in Half Rice Cake, all Resene.
8. Paint a Pegboard
Pegboards are a great way for kids to display all their treasures, especially if they include a few shelves to pop non-hanging items onto. Give a wood design a new lease of life, with a coat of paint to tie it in with your child’s bedroom scheme.
Opt for the same colour as the walls if you want it to blend in, or go for a different shade altogether to help it stand out. You can also use the same colour to paint a few accessories or a piece of furniture, in order to pull the look together.

9. Add 3D Wall Shapes
This is a sweet idea, especially above a study area. Paint a few circles (or another shape of your choice) directly onto the wall and then add a 3D effect by mounting some extra painted cardboard shapes on top.
Overlap them for a layered look, as shown here, and use them as pin boards – or with magnetic paint to hold pictures and postcards.

Style tip: Continue the space theme with star-patterned bedding, a globe and a galactic-inspired rug!
